Our Village Walk: Local Studies Week

As part of local studies week the children in KS1 went on a local walk around the village. The children enjoyed walking past their houses and familiar sites within the village. We learnt about the Old School House which is located on Old road. The children shared many facts they knew about the village.

When we got back to school we looked at some lovely photos donated to the school. These photos were taken when the school was being built. The children answered lots of questions about the pictures and even spotted a few familiar faces! We then looked at an aerial view map of Brixton and mapped our walk with the pictures from earlier.

Our trip to The Box

Today we visited The Box museum in Plymouth. As part of local studies week we went to find out more about the history of Plymouth and Sir Francis Drake. The children were very excited about travelling on a coach to the museum as some children had never been on one. They enjoyed the journey there and were eager to get inside the museum once we had arrived.

Once inside we split off into two groups. We had a lovely lady called Charlotte who delivered an excellent workshop on Sir Francis Drake. We learnt about his place in history and even had a go at sketching his self-portrait.

We then had our lunch and had a little play outside of the museum. After lunch we had a guided tour of the rest of the museum. The children voted that their favourite exhibit was the wooly mammoth exhibition. The children enjoyed learning about different animals and insects and how some of these animals are sadly no longer around.

We then watched a video that showed how the land has changed over many years. This was a very immersive experience as the screen filled the room. We then went into the media room where we learnt about the history of television. The children each had a go at presenting the news.We finished our day by walking through the archives and looking at the naval figureheads that were on the front of big ships.

Sports Day 2022

Today we had our annual sports day. The children had a brilliant afternoon competing on the field for the house cup! The children worked in their house teams to earn points on each activity. We started with a carousel of activities including long jump, an obstacle course, javelin throwing and a target throwing activity. We then started the races where all children took part in a running race as well as the egg and spoon race. Some children represented their house in the KS1 relay. We even had a parent and toddler race! The children tried incredibly hard and Wembury house won the cup!

Red, White and Blue Day

Today we celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We had a fantastic day where the children came dressed in red, white and blue. We created some lovely artwork which will be displayed in the school to commemorate the Jubilee.

The children then sang the national anthem as a school whilst waving their Union Jack flags. To end the wonderful day they all received a special commemorative coin to take home.
